Social Work Role Models
Dr. Dorothy Height (1912-2010) was known throughout the Social Work field for her leadership roles in the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA). She worked at the Harlem YWCA where her attention was directed towards issues about racial justice. In 1965 Dr. Height was elected national interracial education secretary. She was also the first director of YWCA’s new Center for Racial Justice. The turning point of Dr. Height’s life was November 7th of 1937, the day she began her lifelong relationship with NCNW. She worked along Mrs. Mary Bethune, then in 1957 became the 4th elected president. She helped coordinate and organize, along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Whitney Young, and Roy Wilkins, the March on Washington in 1963.
